In 2001, the Department of Defense completed a comprehensive review of the United States' space management program and surmised that an event similar to that of Pearl Harbor could potentially occur if preventative steps were not taken to secure this domain. Led by Donald Rumsfeld, this report marks an important time in military history as it highlights for the first time the importance of space in ensuring the economic, diplomatic, and national security objectives of the United States are achieved. More than twenty years later the topic of a large-scale disabling attack is more relevant than ever amongst defense strategists and policymakers as the importance of this domain has increased dramatically.
