In 2002, Paul O'Neill, then employed as the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, traveled with Bono, of U2, to sub-Saharan Africa as part of a four-nation tour. While resistant to meet with Bono for more than a half-hour, Bono was able to convince O'Neill in their initial meeting that the trip to Africa would allow him to see what U.S. government programs worked if he were to support sending more money to Africa.
Earlier in his career, O'Neill served as the CEO of Alcoa, otherwise known as the "aluminum company of America," from 1987 through 2000, when he was recruited to serve the administration of President George Bush as Treasury Secretary. According to his obituary in the New York Times, when he died in 2020

O'Neill's "biggest career success was at Alcoa, which had suffered after making a series of poor acquisitions before he joined as chief executive in 1987. At the same time, he won praise for improving worker safety and labor relations, increasing productivity and fostering an egalitarian open-door policy with his employees."
