In 2003 the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued students at Michigan Technical University, Princeton University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, charging them with using their universities' networks to distribute copyrighted music files. The RIAA said that the four students were offering from between 27,000 and a million songs to other students, and it asked for about $100 billion in damages. Notably, the RIAA sued the students even though they were only sharing songs with other students on the same college network. They were not distributing them off campus. All four students settled the lawsuits out of court. None of the students admitted any wrongdoing, but all agreed they would stop distributing copyrighted music. One student agreed to pay the RIAA $12,000, two others agreed to pay $15,000, and the four student settled for $17,000
