In 2008, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. Since then, several states have recognized Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state. Serbia has opposed the independence. Discuss the two competing theories on the recognition of states and indicate which theory is currently dominant in international law. Please also discuss which theory could undermine the sovereignty of Kosovo based on Serbia's opposition. Assume that the General Assembly was considering the adoption of a resolution on the recognition of Kosovo. Assess what the legal value of such a resolution could be.
