In 2016, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published Emergency Preparedness Final Rule, which requires all participating health care providers and suppliers to be compliant with requirements to ensure adequate planning for both natural and man-made disasters. In addition, The Joint Commission (TJC), an independent, not-for-profit organization which accredits and certifieshealth care organizations and programs list Emergency Preparedness as one of the accreditation standards.
As a risk manager, you may be asked to participate in the development of an Emergency Preparedness Plan for your organization. One important component of such a plan isrisk assessmentof potential emergency scenarios. - Access Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) Tool from Kaiser Permanente available under learning resources for this week.
- Download the HVA tool (MS Excel file) and the Instruction Sheet.
- Follow the instructions to complete the risk assessment for your facility - assuming you are located in Missouri (so you will have a high probability of tornadoes and floods....). If you chose some other state for your analysis, please clearly state so in your worksheet.
- Upon completion of your worksheet, access the "Summary" tab to make sure that your top 10 HVAs are properly displayed. Save the file.
- Next, produce the ranking of hazards table, similar to the example provided from Saint Francis Medical Center Emergency Operations Plan (page 39) and shown on the image above. Show top 30 hazards. do table in MS Word based on your worksheet.
- Submit both (2) files in Moodle: MS Excel worksheet showing details of your work (50% of your grade) and MS word table (50%) containing risk assessment and rankings for top 30 hazards.
