In 2017, NFL overtime rules were called into question when the Atlanta Falcons lost the Super Bowl after losing the coin flip that determined who would receive the ball first in overtime. Under a perfectly balanced rule system, winning the coin toss would have no effect on the likelihood of winning the game. (Since winning the coin toss is random, the "better" team should win the coin toss half the time.)
