In a Boiler Furnace HFO (Heavy Fuel Oil) is burned in the presents of air to produce heat. The combustion produces 815 KW of thermal energy of which 65% is used to heat water in the boiler tubes that pass through the furnace. Water enters the boiler tubes as liquid at 20C and leaves the tubes as saturated steam at 20 bar absolute. The combustion products are sent out of the Boiler Furnace as exhaust emissions at 650C.As the person assigned to this Unit Operation, you are called upon to do the following: a) Calculate the rate, in kg/h, at which steam is produced [14 marks] b) Use steam tables to estimate the volumetric flow rate of the steam produced. [4 marks] c) Recalculate the volumetric flow rate of the steam produced not using steam tables, but assuming ideal gas behavior of the steam. [10 marks] d) Compare the answers from part b) and part c) to explain which one would be more accurate. [2 marks] e) Explain what happened to the other 35% of thermal energy that was not used to heat the water in the tubes? [3 marks]
