On average 8 patients are waiting to be served, 4 needing routine semi-annual checkup and 4 needing major treatments. Patients are served on a first come first serve basis.

(a) How long do patients wait on average before being served?

(b) The dentist feels that he is losing many customers needing routine checkupbecause of the long wait. He dedicates one chair for routine checkups and one formajor treatment. A study indicates that routine checkups are processed at the rate of3 per hour and major treatment at the rate of 1 per hour. There are now 5 peoplewaiting on average for routine checkups and 3 waiting on average for major dentalwork. How long does each type of patients now wait before being served?
