Techniques in Interrogation

1. Emotional Appeal -using a combination of his acting and psychological skills, the investigator uses this strategy to emotionally appeal to the suspect to confess.
2. Sympathetic Approach -when asking the suspect in-depth or follow-up questions, the investigator should go deeply into the subject's prior problems, struggles, and troubling experiences in order to show sympathy.
3. Friendliness -a friendly demeanor combined with a sincere attitude could persuade the accused to confess.
4. Tricks and Bluff
   1. Pretense of Solid Evidence Against the Accused - when the suspect refuses to confess, the investigator tricks him by saying there is sufficient evidence to put him in jail.
   2. The Weakest Link - the weakest link among the suspect is told that the others have confessed to the crime.
   3. Drama - the investigators plan to fabricate a scene of disturbance in order to give the other suspects the impression that one of their accomplices has confessed.
   4. Feigning Contact with Family Members - the suspect is made to believe that the investigator had visited their residence and that the suspect's relatives had provided evidence against him.
   5. The Line Up - the complainant, witness, or victim is asked to identify the perpetrator who is in the police lineup by pointing them out.
   6. Reverse Line Up - the suspect is lined up with other people and recognized by a number of witnesses and complainants who will link him to various additional crimes.
5. Stern Approach
   1. Jolting - in a seeming fit of righteous outrage, the investigator waits for the ideal chance to yell at the subject, asking a relevant question.
   2. Opportunity to Lie - every chance to lie is given to the suspect. Questions involving the suspect's personal life, family, friends, and knowledge of the complainant, witnesses, and the crime itself are asked.

The Mutt and Jeff - two sets of investigators will interrogate the subject; the first set appearing to be rough and stern while the second set appears to be sympathetic and understanding.

Removing Ethnic or Cultural Barrier - due to the way we live in the Philippines, we have faith and confidence in the people in our clan or tribe. In order to gain the suspect's complete trust, the questioning process needs to be conducted in their native tongue or dialect.

Searching for the Soft Spot - even though a number of events may have toughened the suspect's heart, there will always be a soft spot, which the investigator may be able to find through his understanding of human behavior.
