In a randomized experiment, one group of mice was fed a diet that included yogurt sweetened with sugar and another group of mice were fed a diet that included yogurt sweetened with an artificial sweetener commonly found in diet sodas. The mice were selected randomly for each group. The mice that were fed the artificial sweetener gained more weight and more body fat compared to the mice that were fed sugar. After the results of the study were published some news article headlines claimed that consuming artificial sweeteners leads to weight gain and increased body fat.
