In a research article conducted by Thomson et al. (2019), with the purpose to discover the reason behind a woman's choice to use or not use pharmacological pain relief during child birthing. Considering the study is based on the human experience, phenomenology was the type of design used to move forward with the research. The population used were laboring women in upper-middle- and high-income countries since the use of pharmacological interventions were common practice.
The sample size used in these studies was 24 quality studies from these upper-middle- and high-income countries. Open text survey questions and interviews were used as the main form of data collection. Once all data was collected, Thomson et al. (2019), used thematic and meta-ethnographic and GRADE-CERQual for analysis strategies.
The findings of this research study indicated that laboring women have mixed experiences when it comes to pain relief methods for child birthing. That women require education on both pain relief options with the pros and cons of each choice. All in all, each pregnancy is different and what may work for one won't for another and being informed of your choices makes all the difference.
- Is the purpose of the research study clearly identified?
- Were the methods (design, sample, data collection) identified correctly? If not, provide supporting evidence.
- Was the data analysis strategy clearly reported?
- Do you agree with the overall interpretation of this research study?
