In a solvent manufacturing plant, a waste gas stream with a flowrate of
85mols, contains 0.04mol fraction of toluene. The content of the
toluene in the waste gas stream must be reduced to 100ppm(mol)
prior to atmospheric emission.
a. Condensation technique is used to achieve the above emission
limit. Estimate the operating temperature for the condensation
unit to achieve the above emission limit. Justify whether by
adding another condensation unit in series (with similar
operating pressure and temperature) could contribute to a lower
emission specification (lower than 100ppm).

b. Using adsorption technique, estimate the mass of the activated
carbon required (kg) in order to remove ALL the toluene in the
waste gas stream. The activated carbon must operate
14 hours between the regeneration. Given that the regeneration
temperature and regeneration outlet concentration are 560K
(1008R) and 0.04 mole fraction, respectively. The data for the
saturation parameter calculation is provided in TABLE Q2.
