In a Twenty-First Century Agenda, the authors examine the importance of workplace diversity and diversity management. The article defines diversity management as "a broad strand of organizational management literature that was developed as a means of helping organizations respond to the growing diversity apparent in contemporary labor markets" (Watson, Spoonley, & Fitzgerald, 2009). As more transnational or global companies become successful, an understanding of diversity and multiculturalism is necessary in the workplace. The authors point out that diversity "has evolved to reflect not only a locally diverse workforce but also an internationally diverse workforce, a diverse multicultural customer base, both nationally and internationally, and diverse international competitors" (Watson, Spoonley, & Fitzgerald, 2009). Having educated employees on issues of diversity and being able to work from a more culturally competent viewpoint can lead to the success of a global business.
