In Activity 3 of this lab you will make use of a video made under fairly ideal conditions to obtain a quantitative view of the electrostatic force. In that experiment a small conducting sphere has been placed at the end of an insulating rod. This sphere is then charged and used as a prod to cause another similarly charged sphere which is suspended by a string which will then rise at an increasing angle as the prod is brought closer (similar to the figure below). Your use of Free-body Diagrams and Newton's Second Law as well as adding vectors is likely a little bit rusty, so this Pre-lab will hopefully refresh some of those skills (you will need them this term). A ball of mass in is suspended by a string of length L. A force Fes (not shown) is exerted on the ball such that the ball moves to the left a distance x, displaced an angle @ from the vertical. m 1. Using the dot below to represent the ball, construct a free body diagram of the physical situation described above. -X Fg 2. The ball is not accelerating, use Newton's second law to find an expression for F - Fpon B = 0 F = ma 3. You should have an expression of the form a x where a is a constant for this experiment. What is a? a = 0
