In addition to instrumental uncertainty, you also may encounter random uncertainty. If you were asked to clap your hands immediately after seeing some signal, say a light flash, and you were to perform this experiment many times, you would discover that while most of reaction times (the time between the light flashing and the clapping of your hands) would fall within a very narrow range of times, on rarer occasion you may be quite slow, or unusually quick. As with instrumental uncertainty-your goal is to properly communicate how confident you are with your resul stating the proper uncertainty in your measurement. Here, we will use the uncertainty in our average when communicating measurements that include such random fluctuations. In this lab, you will learn two methods for determining exactly what this uncertainty in the average value is, but both of these methods begin by first calculating what that average is. Given the values in the set below, calculate the average value and write your answer in the box below. (5.8, 1.1, 8.1, 1.8, 2.8) In the experiment you will perform today, we will determine your reaction time, therefore the physical unit will be seconds. However, in this pre-lab question you can disregard the unit and treat the numbers only. In your answer, keep one decimal place (or round to the tenths place).
