In an attempt to break into the competitive passenger plane market, a new plane manufacturing company has spent years developing a new, faster and more fuel-efficient engine that enables their planes to fly at a significantly greater cruising speed than conventional passenger planes, while using the same amount of fuel.

To test this claim, the new company's planes were assessed by aviation officials on 100 flights. The average cruising speed on these flights was 620 mph, while the average cruising speed of other planes of that size and fuel consumption is 575 mph. In addition, the standard deviation in cruising speed for all planes of this size and fuel consumption is 180 mph.

Assuming that aviation officials want to be 95% certain that this difference in cruising speed

is not due to chance (i.e., alpha of .05), and that the analysis could detect a difference in either

direction, can we conclude that this difference in cruising speeds is statistically significant?

(Complete the appropriate analyses below to justify your answer).
