In an experimartal study on absorption of SO2
in a stirred cell, 100ml of watre is taken in the cell
as in figure and a mixture of
14.2%SO2 and 85.8%N2 is passed
through the cell at a vate of
1.5 liter per minute at 20C and
1atm pressure. Water is also passed
through the cell at a rate of 27ml
per minute, the volume of solution
being maintained at 100ml. Both
the gas and the liquid phases are well stirred. The outlet
gas has 11%SO2 in it at steady state. The gas phase mass
transfer coefficient has been measured seperately
(by absorbing NH3 in a solution of H2SO4 under identical
conditions of stirring in the cell and making the necessary
diffusivity correction) and is found to be 3.8kmolh(m2)y
(a) calculate the concent ratio of SO2 in effluent solution,
the liquid phase mass transfer coefficient and rate of surface renewal.
(b) What must be the flowrate of water through the cell so
that the rate of absorption increases and out let gas concentration
drops to 10%? Solubility of SO2 in water is given by y=3x
in concentration range; diffusivity in water =1.5110-5cm2s,
