In August of 2006, Mrs. Edwina McCombs was on vacation with her two young daughters, ages 8 & 9 and were staying at a Value Lodge motel in Artesia, California. Mrs. McCombs checked into the motel and shortly thereafter, she went to take a bath in her guest room bathroom, assuming her two girls were in her motel room watching a children's TV show she had found on the television for her girls to watch. After some time, the girls knocked on the bathroom door and were visibly upset. The children, according to their mother, were exposed to close up images of people engaged in sodomy and homosexual acts on the television screen. Ms. Combs filed a lawsuit, claiming emotional distress and negligence, after discovering that California did not have a law that prohibited the showing of pornography to children. She claimed that her daughters had been showing psychological symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The owner of the motel said that there are warning signs posted in the guest rooms and that guests can ask to have the material blocked when checking in to the motel.
