In batch alcohol distillation, the still is charged with a mixture of ethanol in water. Heat is added to the still and a vapor stream is created that is more concentrated in ethanol than the feed. This vapor is condensed to form the distillate product. The liquid that remains in the still, called the bottoms or residual, is then removed to ready the still for the next batch.\ In one such run, a 12 wt % solution of ethanol in water (sg = 0.97) was fed to the still. This distillate recovered weighed 270 lbm, had an alcohol concentration of 66 wt% and had a volume of 37.3 U.S. gallons.
