In briefly own words response to the following discussion board by a student

The major types of leaders mentioned in the textbook include servant, transformational, and authentic. Servant leaders "consistently makes decisions to further the good of the group of followers over any decisions that satisfy self-interests. Servant leaders engage others and search for ethically meaningful ways to make decisions" (Butts & Rich, 2023, p. 655). It is also considered the most ethical type of leadership. Servant leaders are advocates for the people they are in charge of. They see themselves as an equal to those around them, which can sometimes lead to people taking advantage of their kindness. They are also active listeners which makes them even more approachable in times where an issue needs to be resolved. Transformational leaders "strive for change in the culture of an organization rather than working within the status quo and are measured by the degree of transformation demonstrated by the followers" (Butts & Rich, 2023, p. 656). Transformational leaders are focused on the growth of those they manage as well as themselves. They promote shared goals and want to constantly push people to be the best they can be. An issue, however is that they may take this a step too far and become a transactional leader. In this case, they "persuade followers to conform by exercising their power" (Butts & Rich, 2023, p. 657). The leader must ensure that they are being assertive enough to encourage people to grow without being aggressive. Another type of leadership is called authentic leadership. In this case, "an authentic leader serves as a moral compass for, a facilitator to, and a supporter of followers striving to reach their high values and purposes" (Butts & Rich, 2023, p. 658). They are extremely transparent and open. In this way, they can be easy people to converse with and discover solutions to any conflicts that may arise.

In the healthcare setting, I believe that transformational leadership is most effective. Focusing not only on the growth of those around them but on their own growth as well is important. This can hopefully avoid any feelings of resentment if somebody they once trained bypasses them in their career path. As long as the person does not become too assertive, pushing people towards their goals can be very effective. If one nurse on a unit wants to become a nurse practitioner, the leader may help them reach that goal. As mentioned earlier, they also promote shared goals. If the whole unit wants to improve their skills in a specific treatment, the leader can also be instrumental in ensuring this happens.
