In chapter 2 ofthe text, the authors discussed ethical theories from the perspective of philosophers and what individuals should do in ethical situations. In chapter 3, the view changes to the psychological and observations about what people actually thinl: and do. Sometimes people do not recognize that a situation has ethical elements, and they do not engage their thought around the ethical issues that may be present. Ethical awareness must come first. Such awareness may be raised by peers, e.g., do they consider the situation one with ethical dimensions; by the language used, i.e., is the situation framed as an issue with ethical elements: and whether the situation has the potential to result in harm to others, e.g., the high cost of lifesaving medicines in poor countries. Following awareness, people engage in ethical judgment in different ways. They have different styles. For example, some tend to be idealistic while others are relativistic. Psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg identified different cognitive systems of reasoning used in ethical situations and suggested that they are developmental based on age, education and experience. Locus of control may affect ethical decisions. The person with a high eternal locus of control will believe that events are controlled by luck or external forces. A person with a strong internal locus of control believes that events are controlled of one's own effort. Most of us behave ethically and feel guilty when considering an unethical act. But some individuals may employ moral disengagement mechanisms that make unethical action seem to be more acceptable. For example, language may suggest that an unethical action has a socially valuable outcome. For example, a car dealer may offer highinterest loans to someone who would otherwise be ineligible to borrow because the loan will make it possible to purchase a car. Finally, the authors ask you to \"think about your gut.\" Cine should ask what our feelings, emotions and intuition tell us about the ethical elements of a situation. Ciur rational processes of decision making may not lead us to a declsion that is right for us. Also, thinking about the emotional side of ethical decision making may help us to identify and avoid unconscious biases
