In chapter eight you leam techniques related to persuasive writing. With the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) method you will be exposed to a vesiety of techniques for each part of the method. You can use techniques from each part of the method by themsetves or you can use techniques from some or all parts of the method Attention Gatter Attention getting techniques are meant to get the attention of your audienke and mabe them want to read or listen to your message. You can use an attention getter whether or not you use the direct or indirect approach. You might add an attention getter in the opening of your message that highlights a relevant statistic that supports your main idea or you might altematively, include a major benefit to doing business with your company in the opening as an attention getter. Interest Now that you ve got your audience's artention, you want to peak their interest by using an interest-oriented techinique. You can build interest in your topic or main idea by highlighting a key selling point or introduce benefits of your main idea. You can also focus on the "you" attitude for this part of the AIDA method. Alternatively, you can focus on using logical and/or emotional appeals. Many times you will hear appeals used in informercials. where they mention how you can donate a car and get a tax deduction, a logical appeal, or you might see a sick child or animal that would be an emotional appeal. Desife Desire is meant to be in second body position, when it comes to technique placement, because once you've gotten attention and peaked your audience's interest, you want them to desire your product/service/main idea. You might include testimonials from customers, anticlpate and respond to potentiat objections related to your product or service andi/ or expand on feapures and benefits. Desine Desire is meant to be in second body position, when it comes to technique placement, because once you've gotten attention and peaked your audience's interest, you want them to desire your product/service/main idea. You pnight include testimonials from customers, anticipate and respond to potential objections related to your product or service and/or expand on features and benefits. Keep in mind that your body section will still include your data, facts, evidence, relevant detail, etc. Also, that you should use Interest and/or Desire techniques in whatever order is logical for your message and main idea. Action The final step in the AIDA method includes you motivating action for your audience. You have already considered some action-oriented techniques in other types of messages, such as use of "making action easy:" or identifying "steps your audience can or should take." If you use a traditional medium, such as a persuasive radio ad or sales message sent through snail mail, you may consider creating a sense of urgency or adding a "P.S" or post script. where you add an additional offer, etc. Don't forget that since you are guiding your audience through your message, therefore, you want to present content in a logical and easy to understand order. With more complex messages, I would suggest creating an outline where you identify the specific content and add an associated technique with the content. When you correlate an associated technique with your content, it may be easler for you to determine which content is necessary and where the best place is for the content.
