b) Planter had the following expenditures for taxes during
the year 20x2: payment of 20x1 state income tax, $84;
quarterly estimates of his 20x2 federal income tax, $4,600;
final payment of net amount due on 20x1 federal income tax
return, $310. How much may Planter deduct for 20x2?
c) Jan operates a business. During the year she remitted
to the federal government $19,000 of income taxes withheld
from employees' earnings. She remitted $9,000 in FICA
taxes, representing $4,500 deducted from employees'
paychecks and Jan's contributions of $4,500. She also paid
$170 federal unemployment compensation taxes and $920 state
unemployment compensation taxes on her employees' earnings.
d) Tradesman operates a business. During the year he
imported jewelry for resale in the business, paying an
import tariff of $980. In addition, he imported some
jewelry for his wife's personal use, paying an import
tariff of $230.
e) Peggy operates a retail gift shop. She paid $720 of
"self-employment" taxes on her net earnings.
