In evaluating claims of the recovery of repressed memories, many have entertained the possibility that at least some may be false memories. A) What evidence that we have considered in class suggests that it is possible for people to endorse and believe false memories of things that never actually happened to them? B) Briefly describe the work by Clancy that raises concerns about the relationship of false memory to suggestibility.

As reference, here is an overview of Clancy's experiment:

One experiment discussed in class where a false memory was implanted is the Clancy et al., 2000. There were four groups of participants with 15 women in each: recovered, repressed, continuous, and control groups. The recovered group had recovered repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse. The repressed group believed they had been sexually abused as children, but had no specific memories of it. The continuous group knew they were sexually abused as children and never forgot it. The control group has no history of childhood sexual abuse. They had the participants do the DRM Task where 12 lists of words were studied. The results revealed that everyone basically had a similar performance in remembering words that were actually on the list. However, the recovered group was statistically more likely to recall false recognition of words that were not on the list. This showed that maybe people who have recovered these repressed memories are more susceptible to having false memories, therefore this is a factor that makes false memory implantation more likely for these individuals. Another factor is that individuals who have repressed memories are also more likely to have false memories in their daily lives.
