In her "Preface to the First Edition" of The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt does not identify "merely hatred of the Jews" (what she calls anti-Semitism) with the element of 'antisemitism' she identifies as a historical precondition for totalitarianism. (a) What does she mean by 'antisemitism'? Clearly distinguish it from 'anti-Semitism' and the four fallacious understandings she rejects in the early part of the Antisemitism section. (b) How and why does the Dreyfus Affair represent this precondition as a dress rehearsal for what would follow in the 20th century.
