In his spare time Charlie Coder enjoys collecting and selling comics. He collects comics and pop culture items from markets and opportunity shops, usually in remote areas, and then sells them in the cities of Darwin and Palmerston. He doesn't make a lot of money, but it is a nice hobby. He and his best friend, Lisa, also like to collect objects of pop culture.
One day Charlie was at the Mindil Market and found a model of 'Buzz Lightyear' at the market stall. It is listed for sale at $100.00. Charlie can't believe his luck.He negotiates with the owner "This is a very valuable item. I'll purchase it right now." The stall owner senses an opportunity. "This item has been reserved for Lisa; however, I can sell it to you for $500.00 if you purchase it now".Charlie calls Lisa and says that he really wants the item. Lisa texts the owner and tells her that she will purchase the model for Charlie on his behalf. The storeowner refuses to accept Lisa's offer to buy the item for Charlie.
Charlie returns home a little disappointed. As Charlie is only 17 years old, he lives with his Uncle Howard whilst attending university at CDU. He helps his uncle set up an eBay account onto which he uploaded several photos and a description of old comics. The terms and conditions suggest all sellers should be over the age of 18.
Under instruction from Charlie, Howard put a low starting price of $10 on the comic book items which Charlie owns. He tells Howard that a low price was the way to attract attention and start a bidding war. Who knows what price the item might reach once the bidding starts? The item was open for bidding for 5 days.
A bidding war begins over Charlie's comics. Howard sells over $1000 of comics in one day. When Charlie returns home Howard says, 'Thanks for the loan,' and gives Charlie a fifty dollar note for his comics pocketing the change. Charlie refuses to give Howard the comics to pass onto the sellers.
