In his State of the Union Address to the United States Congress, then-President Barack Obama proclaimed, "You know, today, women make up about half our workforce, but they still make seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man earns. That is wrong, and in 2014, it's an embarrassment. Women deserve equal pay for equal work." In section 12-2e of your text, McEachern states,"Because some women do more housework and childcare than men do, they may have less job experience and tend to seek more flexible positions, both of which reduce their pay." If women are paid less because they have less experience or choose more flexible positions than their male counterparts, then is President Obama correct that women earn less pay for equal work? Does this constitute gender discrimination in the labor market? Do social norms and traditional stereotypes restrict women from freely exercising their occupational preferences?
