In its May 2022 article, the National Library of Medicine published a study titled " The Possibility of Including Donkey Meat and Milk in the Food Chain: A Southern African Scenario" in which the authors claimed the following:

"The demand for donkey products such as meat and milk has increased in recent years, as new information on the health benefits of the products is becoming more available. Recent nutritional trends have shown a preference for nutritional and functional foods, giving consumers more options to choose from. Donkey products are seen as valuable foods that contain appreciable nutraceutical properties."

On the other hand, in its July 9, 2022, article "Africa's donkeys being slaughtered for Chinese medicine; Popular Chinese drama behind increased demand" published in Mirror Now Digital, the author claimed that ""It was all set in the (Chinese) imperial court and at a certain time of the day, the ladies of the court would all say, "Let's have some eijao"', as a result of this program the demand for ejiao just literally went through the roof," he said of the show's first broadcast in 2011. Pope said, Ejiao, also called donkey glue, is used as medicine or as a tonic for health and beauty in China, However, China does not have enough donkeys to meet the demand leading to them looking for sources abroad and finding them, particularly in Africa where they're used as a beast of burden by rural communities from Mali to Zimbabwe to Tanzania. When locals refused to sell, thefts of their livestock started, with distressed farmers finding their precious donkeys skinned and left to rot on the fields."

Meat and milk are produced in different facilities than the stolen skin. As such the cost of production and the waste are high. Some economists believe that China is extending an economical helping hand to Africa with the main objective to expand economically and a secondary objective to minimize the cost of production and maximize profit in the donkey's industry. Peope's Daily Online stated in its May 13, 2022 article "As a staunch supporter and important partner of Africa on the path of green development, China has implemented over 100 clean energy and green development projects under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), to support African countries in the better use of solar, water, wind, methane, and other clean energy resources and contribute to the sustainable development of Africa. " While CNN stated in its Sept 29, 2016 article "Just as with other livestock, raw materials and other natural resources, the scale of the demand from China is often so large that it can rapidly overwhelm the supply of any single resource," he says. "Governments that trade with China...have an obligation to their people to regulate trade so it does not deplete any single resource to the point where it imposes burdens on their own people."
