In its purest form, the safety profession is about preventing accidents/incidents; not responding. However, the safety profession recognizes that as long as risk remains, it must be vigilant in responding to and managing those unplanned, unwanted events; particularly those that are real emergencies. Some companies go to great lengths (and rightfully so) to develop knowledge, acquire cutting-edge equipment, and draft extensive manuals to respond to emergencies.
