In Loftus and Palmer's (1974) study, some participants were asked to provide a speed estimate like the one described above, but others were asked to estimate how fast the cars were going when they smashed into each other, or when they bumped into each other. How and why would those estimates differ? How else did performance differ across these conditions? Why are these differences and outcomes problematic?
