In May 2020, distinguished astrophysicist Reinaldo was invited to London to provide the keynote speech for a prestigious conference on "The Big Bang and the Origins of Life". His long-term, on-off girlfriend Krystal, who was excited to hear her first ever academic conference, accompanied him for the trip.

Reinaldo was welcomed to the stage with rapturous applause, with these special effects initially building the audience's sense of anticipation. But the mood soon turned to horror, as the fittings became loose, ultimately causing a fiery burst and loud explosion that engulfed Reinaldo in flames. Reinaldo lost his life and many of the attendees suffered burns.

Krystal, who was sat 20 rows from the stage, was not physically harmed but has suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ever since. Reinaldo's father, Trevor, was watching remotely via Zoom and saw this tragedy unfold as it occurred. He now has organic depression. Moira, a paramedic who arrived at the scene after the fire department extinguished the flames, had tried to save Reinaldo. Her attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and she now suffers from panic attacks.
