In more recent times, one of the major challenges in staffing the front-desk is labor shortages or being short-staffed. It can be difficult to fill a shift or a front-office position when there are fewer current employees and potential employees available. Another challenge is motivation. The fast-paced and often stressful nature of front-desk positions means that it is more difficult to retain front-desk employees as well as motivate those who stay. In these situations, one of the more common solutions is automation installing systems where guests check themselves into the establishment decreasing the need for actual employees at the front-desk (Watson, 2022).

As with front-desk employees, housekeeping is also experiencing at times worse labor shortages with around forty-three percent of hotels claiming that short-staffing in housekeeping was their worst problem as of late 2022. To resolve this hotels have begun increasing wages and incentives in order to attract and maintain a housekeeping workforce (Walker, 2022). Other challenges to staffing housekeeping include the overall nature of the work and at times language barriers due to many positions being filled by those who speak other languages besides the main language at the hotel. In addition motivation is also an issue for housekeeping employees as well because of these previously mentioned challenges (Brunot, n.d.).
