In my in person class on earlier this month there was a very hot debate. The debate was around whether the right to freely express religion was a valid civil liberty because of the abuse of power seen in many Catholic or parochial schools. Essentially some students argued that by giving people the right to express religious freedom, this allows privately owned religious schools to cause havoc at the expense of young children who were never offered a choice on whether they wanted to attend or not. This debate naturally brought forward the notion of parental rights as parental expressions of religion inadvertently extend to children.

Here's the question: Do you think that the right to express religious freedom is a valid civil liberty or one that needs to be revised?
