In my Lecture and in the readings we discussed Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). With regard to ethical behavior, we have traditionally believed that corporate activity was ethical. With regard to social responsibility, there are some who believe that businesses should "give back" to society in some form or fashion. Big corporations are particularly singled out for contribution to others outside of their corporate family. There are some who think corporations are evil money grabbers and need to "pay back" because they make too much money. Ethical behavior by companies appears to be eroding in our day. Corporations are supposed to (traditionally) regard their owners, (read stockholders) and other stakeholders as their sole responsibility. Recently, government activities have caused changes in company operations and management ethics. More recently we have experienced a return to the days of unethical "robber baron" activities; witness the activities of Twitter (X), Parler, Facebook, Amazon, and other hi-tech firms. What are your thoughts on Corporate Ethics, CSR, and the purpose of a corporation? Put yourself in the role of a CEO or President of a successful company, large or small....but successful. Will you contribute, or will you resist? Will you drive out competition because they threaten your position? Do you think CSR is ethical or political extortion?
