In one of my favorite shows, "Yellowstone" there are two characters throughout the show that constantly argue over one incident that they cannot get over. Beth and Jaime are siblings and, both play a role in protecting their father's land. When Beth and Jaime were kids (around 13 years old?) Beth became pregnant and Jaime had to take his sister to get an abortion without anyone finding out. The problem with this abortion was that it would make Beth sterile and she would never be able to have kids of her own in the future. Beth went on to have the procedure done without knowing the circumstances and she blamed her brother Jaime for years when she realized what he had done to her. In Beth's situation. I would apply restorative practices by trying to understand that my brother was young as well at the time, he might not have thought about the long-term consequences. He was trying to be a good big brother and take care of the situation. Having an open mind and considering others can help resolve conflict. Putting yourself in their shoes and seeing things from their perspective can help see why the other person would do what they did.

  1. What is another restorative practice you could use to address the conflict your peer identified?
  2. What effect do you think using restorative practices might have on the situation your peer described?
  3. What benefits could vulnerability, having an open mind, and considering others have on the conflict identified in your peers' post?
