In order to assess attitudes about renewable energy, the Pew Research Center asked a random sample of 705 American adults whether they believe that the private market will move the American economy toward renewable energy or they support regulation. From the sample, 371 responded that "regulation is necessary" to guide the American economy toward renewable energy, while 288 responded that the "marketplace is sufficient." (The remainder responded "Don't know")
