In order to better understand the impact weather has on the insurance industry in Canada, it helps to understand the
event from different perspectives. How will the event impact our economy, what are the financial implications for
insurance companies and other resources, and more importantly, what impact does it have from the human
perspective? This will be the focus of your research assignment.
1. Chose an extreme weather event in Canada that has resulted in significant property damage.
2. Do brief synopsis of the event. Include in your research reports from news outlets and other reliable sources,
including print and video.
3. Determine to the best of your ability using insurance reporting sources the outcome of the loss and the damages
paid. For example, search the event using the Insurance Bureau of Canada or trade publications such as
Canadian Underwriter or Without Prejudice.
4. Explain why understanding the outcome of extreme weather events is important to the property insurance
industry?
