- In part 6 of this assignment, you discussed your poll/survey results. Now that you have had time to reflect on those results, what conclusions can you draw from your study?
- Does there appear to be any confounding factors in your study? (i.e. is there an underlying reason for any of the results that you found surprising?)
- Do you feel that your poll/survey question(s) were appropriate for your hypothesis? (Was there a better way you could have worded the question(s); Did you ask the "right" question(s)?).
- Begin to identify limitations of your study. (Think about your poll/survey tool, sample population, sample size, etc.).
PART 6
Poll/Survey Summary: Age: 60% of respondents were between the ages of 18 and 24, with 40% falling between the ages of 35 and 44. Gender: 40% identified as male, 40% as female, and 20% declined to answer.
Employment Status: The majority work full-time 40%, followed by part-time 20% and other 40%. Highest Degree or Level Completed: 60% claimed to have had additional education, 20% had a high school diploma, and 20% had a bachelor's degree. Social Media Usage: Usage is fairly split among Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and LinkedIn (12% each), with less on Pinterest and Reddit (6% each) and none on Threads or TikTok. Frequency of Social Media Use: Most respondents use social media platforms, often 60%, sometimes 20%, and always 20%. Time Spent on Social Media: Equal distribution between 1-2 hours and 2-3 hours (40% each), with fewer spending more than 3 hours (20%). Mental Health Impact: A majority do not feel anxiety and depression from using social media (75%), while 25% do. Distressing Content: Most encounter distressing content occasionally (60%), while 40% encounter it frequently. Impact on Mental Well-Being: There is a split in opinions regarding social media's beneficial effects on mental health, with 40% opposing, 40% being neutral, and 20% agreeing.
Were the results of your poll/survey what you expected them to be (as you predicted in your hypothesis)? Were there any surprises or unexpected results?
The poll results were somewhat consistent with expectations. For example, it is not surprising that a greater proportion of young people (18-24) use social media than older people. However, some surprise findings include a relatively high percentage of respondents reporting regular encounters with disturbing content, as well as different assessments of social media's positive impact on mental well-being.
Describe the relationship between the variables in your hypothesis. (i.e. Do the variables appear to have a positive correlation, negative correlation, or no correlation? Does there appear to be a strong relationship or weak relationship?)
Age and Social Media Usage: There might be a negative correlation as older age groups tend to use social media less frequently.
Time Spent on Social Media and Feelings of Anxiety/Depression: There might be a positive correlation, as spending more time on social media could potentially lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression.
Exposure to Distressing Content and Mental Well-being: There might be a negative correlation, as encountering distressing content frequently could negatively impact mental well-being
