In September 2018, a former Conservative Party cabinet minister named Maxime Bernier, along with others disappointed with the Conservative Party, formed a new political party, The People's Party of Canada. The 2019 federal election was the new party's first major opportunity to compete for seats in Parliament. A copy of their 2019 election platform is available in electronic form from the York University Library (People's Party of Canada 2019).

James Gillies (2020, p.84) suggests one of the reasons the party failed to garner much support in 2019, is because there was a disconnect between the way the party and its leader operated (much like a traditional top-down, elite led Canadian political party) and the populist right-wing ideas it espoused. In short, voters who liked the ideas and policies the party put forward, might not have liked either the party or its leader.
