In September 27, 2017, The Guardian newspaper published a rather scandalous article written by Alstair Gee, titled, "Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars: Adjunct professors in America face low pay and long hours without the security of full-time faculty. Some, on the brink of homelessness, take desperate measures." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/28/adjunct-professors-homeless-sex-work-academia-poverty Later on September 15, 2020, the Business Insider published an article written by Allana Akhtar and Taylor Borden, titled, "15 college presidents who've been paid millionaire salaries" reporting that among other university presidents, former Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley made $6,283,616 in 2017. https://www.businessinsider.com/the-highest-paid-us-college-and-university-presidents-2019-5?amp While the adjunctification of higher education is increasingly used by the universities as cost reduction mechanism, there is also a widening gap between full-time faculty and administration, which in addition to issues of fair compensation, has a negative impact on the quality of American higher education.
In this week's posting, First read both articles, and then pretend you are a high ranking administrator at a university with a six figure salary, and the students complain to you that their adjunct professors are demotivated due to low pay. While you can hire new adjuncts who work harder, you may not resolve the problem. Therefore, you need to address this situation by tapping into the five theoretical models on motivation and coaching that are listed below. For each theoretical model explain WHY the model is relevant to this case, and HOW you can apply it to motivate the adjuncts and improve the quality of education. Make sure you consider each of the five theoretical models, as missing one or more will lower your grade.
Five Theoretical Models: 1) Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory; 2) Alderfer's Existence, Relatedness and Growth (ERG) Theory; 3) Herzberg's Motivation and Hygiene Theory; 4) Berne's Theory of Transactional Analysis; and 5) Gallwey's Inner Game.
