In the Army, they have a program called Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP). The main purpose of SHARP is to try and prevent sexual assaults and sexual harassment before they occur. SHARP is continuously refining its policies to help protect the victims and to give more resources to those who are in need. There are several ways SHARP protects the victim, such as reporting. There are two different ways a soldier can report, which are restricted and unrestricted. Restricted reporting is when a soldier discloses to SHARP personnel that sexual assault has occurred, but it will not notify their command. In other words, a restricted report will not prompt an investigation. Unrestricted reporting is when a soldier still discloses that sexual assault or sexual harassment has occurred, however, the victim would be allowed to request protective and support measures. Unrestricted reports will also prompt an official investigation. The main objective of allowing the victim to file between the two different reports is because the sexual harassment/assault will still go on file either way. The victim may not feel comfortable enough to prompt an investigation. However, if the victim wants to change their restricted report to an unrestricted report, they are allowed to do so. This would mean the change to unrestricted would prompt an official investigation. Unrestricted reports cannot change to restricted reports due to an official investigation already being opened
