In the Chesapeake Bay a new approach to management is being proposed. Historically, sharks have been present to keep rays in check and allow oysters to be abundant (good for water quality), but in recent years sharks have been overfished, dropping their abundance and allowing the stingrays to be highly abundant. Managers are encouraging people to start to fish for the rays and serve them in restaurants, despite not being menu items in the past. Simple food chain depictions are below.
