In the classical period, Vibius purchased Tulla, a slave who was a talented singer. Vibius purchased Tulla from Spurius, a slave dealer who had kidnapped her from her owner, Quintus, in provincial Gaul and brought her to Rome. Vibius believed Spurius to be Tulla's owner. Six months after purchasing Tulla, Vibius died. His estate was inherited by Postumus, his only son. Postumus used his inherited wealth to devote himself to art. He learned that his friend Octavius was travelling to Greece and asked him to look out for poems by Simonides of Ceos, the only famous lyric poet whose poems Postumus had not read. Octavius, who had no interest in poetry, agreed to purchase any poems by Simonides that he found, on behalf of Postumus. Seven months after Vibius' death, Nonus invited Postumus to a party. Nonus was a wealthy Roman and noted socialite, whose parties were famous. Nonus also asked if Tulla could perform at the party too. Postumus agreed. Quintus had recently travelled to Rome and was invited to the same party. While Tulla was performing, Postumus was overcome with inspiration. He grabbed the nearest paper he could find and began to write. Postumus wrote a poem in a newly prepared blank volume which Nonus had commissioned for the renowned scribe Marcus to produce a collection of Cicero's speeches. That volume had been expensively bound to be part of Nonus' library. Quintus saw Tulla's performance at the party. Once she had finished singing, Quintus approached Tulla and told her to come back with him to Gaul. Tulla left with Quintus. Postumus assumed that Tulla had returned to his home straight after her performance, as she sometimes did. After he tired of the party, Postumus decided to leave. As he was doing so, he dropped the book containing his poem. This was picked up by one of the guests, Marcus, who quickly scanned it and assumed it was a deliberately comic parody of traditional love poetry. He began to read it to the guests, trying hard to stifle his own laughter. Many of the guests began to chuckle. Marcus looked at Postumus and saw that he was upset at this reaction. Marcus chose to continue reading to the end of the poem, at which point many of the guests burst into laughter and applause. Postumus burst into tears, grabbed the book and fled from the house. On his travels, Octavius found a collection of poems attributed to Simonides. He purchased them for Postumus, using his own money. Octavius returned to Rome, and gave Postumus the collection. Postumus was ecstatic, sure that such excellent work would take his mind off the party and the fact that Tulla was missing. After reading the first poem, Postumus realised that although the poems were attributed to Simonides, they were all by Bacchylides, something which would have been obvious to anyone with familiarity with Greek poetry. The attribution had clearly been made to try and increase the price of an otherwise very standard volume. Postumus refused to pay Octavius for poems he already had in his collection.
