In the E4 Datafile you will find a worksheet called 'Handedness and Authoritarianism' that contains some survey data. The survey included 10 questions about hand use preferences for 10 different daily activities (like writing or using a spoon). These questions are part of the Edinburgh handedness inventory, which can be used to measure how consistently handed you are. Most people in the world are consistently handed (CH). They like to use the same hand for just about everything. About a third of people are inconsistently handed (ICH). They might always write with their right hand but always use a spoon with their left hand. Or, they might usually use one hand for most activities but sometimes use the other hand. Although it might not sound like much of a difference there are some distinct cognitive and personality differences between these two groups. For one, consistent handers are more authoritarian than inconsistent handers. This means that consistent handers tend to prefer obedience to the government and authority figures more than inconsistent handers do. I'm not making this up, this is a real finding! There were also four questions on this survey that listed two different attributes. Participants were asked to pick which attribute is most important for a child to have: respect for others/independence; obedience/self- reliance; good manners/curiosity; well-behaved/considerate. As you can probably guess (now that we're talking about it), the first attribute in each dyad is something that an authoritarian person would choose. We can add up the total number of authoritarian responses and non- authoritarian responses for each group and put them all in an observed frequency table, which I've already done for you as a really cheap Christmas present. TLDR; Conduct a chi-square test to see if authoritarian and non authoritarian responses were different based on handedness consistency. What is x2? 4.7 3.9 5.7 4.2
