PROBLEM You are studying various ions and need a reliable method of distinguishing between different types of particles. You have read that mass spectrometry, in which ionized samples can be sorted on the basis of their charge-to-mass ratio, could be a useful method. Mass spectrometry relies on a uniform magnetic eld, which you hope to be able to produce in order to continue with your experimentation. Your goal is to determine how to best produce a uniform magnetic field in the lab. You also aim to better understand how the mass spectrometry process can distinguish between singly-ionized particles of different masses and apply your ndings to discover what type of particle makes up your current sample
