In the landmark case of Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, Jerry Falwell brought claims against Hustler Magazine as a result of a satirical ad that spoofed a popular liquor ad from the time. The satire published by Hustler Magazine portrayed Mr. Falwell in a very negative light, and some of the statements in the ad were very offensive to Mr. Falwell. As a result of the ad, he sued Hustler Magazine for invasion of privacy, libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
