In the "notes" section of PowerPoint 2, Slide 16, it suggests that people tend to 'age out' of crime. For this journal, you will write a minimum of 3 well-developed paragraphs (as detailed below). In this assignment, I want you to think critically about the things that you believe influence people to step away from criminality as they get older. Conversely, I also want you to think about why some people do not age out of crime and instead, remain involved in criminal activity regardless of their age. Lastly, I want you to think as a Criminologist would, and suggest how we can support former criminals in an effort to keep them from going back to their old ways. Reflective Paragraphs:
Paragraph 1:
- Based on our course information, we acknowledge that, generally speaking, age and criminal activity have an inverse relationship. Therefore, as people increase in age, their engagement in criminal activity tends to decrease. What is one plausible reason why you think people tend to 'age out' of crime? Elaborate to fully explain your thoughts.
Paragraph 2:
- While we acknowledge that age and criminal activity are often inversely related, we also know that some people live a life of criminality, and never truly step away from their criminal behaviour. While the activities they engage in may change over time, they still remain involved in criminal activity in some way - either directly, or through their personal associations. What is one reason why you believe that some individuals never truly leave the world of crime, despite growing older? Elaborate to fully explore your ideas.
Paragraph 3:
- As Criminologists, we need to be concerned about the amount of criminal activity that happens in our society. What can we do to support those who have aged out of crime, or who have turned away from criminal activity, to ensure that they do not go back to their old ways? Provide at least one plausible suggestion of something that we (society) can do to support former criminals and to encourage them to not return to their criminal ways. Provide a specific example and elaborate to fully explore/explain your thoughts.
