In the paper "Does compulsory school attendance affect schooling and earnings?" by Angrist and Krueger (1991), differences in quarter of birth are shown to be correlated with educational attainment and, in turn, future earnings. Why is there a relationship between quarter of birth and educational attainment? Under what assumptions can we use comparisons of earnings among individuals born in different months of the year to measure the causal effect of education on wages?
