POST 1 (C. Gore)__________________________________________________________
The following readings this week were interesting and good to read in order to better understand cultural diversity. To answer the first question "What characteristics do culturally competent communicators exhibit?" I feel that the best characteristics for competent communicators is adaptability and awareness. I feel adaptability is important to the current cultural diversity in the world, many different cultures and individuals are mixing with other cultures and relocating to other countries with different types of people and customs, to respect and be aware of these different types of cultures it is almost required to adapt to your environment. This leads into awareness, while adapting you need to be aware of the culture you are adapting to in order to communicate with individuals in the culture.
The second question "Why would culturally competent communicators be an asset in a professional setting?" this is great question and something many companies and businesses should ask themselves when hiring individuals. When hiring an individual who is culturally competent it can reflect well on the company or business when conducting business internationally. Competent communicators can show respect to employees from businesses in other countries which can provide better reviews, opportunities, and financial gains to the company or business.
The last question "How can cultural competence impact the level of health care a patient receives? Why should those in the healthcare industry strive for cultural competence?". I can speak from experience from living in another country who speaks a different language and have a different culture. When dealing with the health care system from somewhere that may not have cultural competence many sayings, instructions, and questions can get confused and can normally irritate either the patient or the health care staff. When using an individual who is culturally competent it can affect how the hospital is seen and how open they are to individuals from different cultures and countries. This can also help describe any instructions a doctor may have for the patient.
