In the video "Out of the Mouths of Babes," the language development theory emphasizes the biological perspective. This theory posits that language is innate and that exposure to language enables its learning and mastery. To support this claim, a child is showcased practicing her acquired language skills (Cook, 1980, 3:05-3:55). One experiment conducted is Jean Gleason's Wug test, which tests the rules of language. This test found that children form basic plural conjugations of verbs, not through imitation or memorization (Massari, 2021). In the video, the Wug Test is conducted on Noah, demonstrating that he can accurately follow grammatical rules at five and a half (Cook, 1980, 12:21-13:22).

My position on language acquisition derives from an eclectic approach that acknowledges the biological and social-environmental influences. Linguist Noam Chomsky held that biologically, the human brain is prewired for language - that is, to detect language and master its rules, which he termed as the language acquisition device (Santrock, 2021, p. 159). However, with respect to the language milestones, biology alone does not account for mastery of any language. Social and environmental influences, such as the interaction view, involving language and specific context, parentese or child-directed speech, and strategies like recasting, expanding, and labeling affect language (Santrock, 2021, pp. 160-162). Only through the combined efforts of nature and social interaction can one truly reach the full proficiency of any language. Reading to a child before they talk is beneficial as it immerses them in language, may help shape future reading habits, and promotes bonding time with the child. The sensory experience of sitting with a parent and hearing their voice leads to brain engagement and fosters learning (Sheldon-Dean, n.d.).
